Growing Up In Harlem

Azealia Banks: “Everyone thinks I’m from London but I’m not; I’m from Harlem. My childhood was good, I did a lot of artsy stuff—I wasn’t a street kid. Even though I did play on the streets, my mom definitely kept me in a lot of extracurricular stuff.

Everyone always thinks I’m a fucking alien.

"I went to LaGuardia. [So did Nicki Minaj, but] I don’t know Nicki Minaj. People say that because we went to the same high school but she graduated like 10 years ago. I was a drama major over there so I have a musical theatre background.

“Everyone always thinks I’m a fucking alien. I don’t even know what my accent sounds like. It’s so bad because I have buck teeth so I have a lisp. I grew up in Harlem but all my friends growing up were Spanish girls and my dad’s side of the family is from Barbados.

"I hang out in London, I have a lot of French friends, and I lived in Montreal for a while. So my whole language and [speech] is all fucked up.”

Acting

Azealia Banks: “I did some small [acting roles] when I was 13. I wasn’t really getting anything but I was going on so many auditions. We had call-backs but it always would be liability shit. If they hire someone who’s not 18 they have to pay for their parents to come, pay for tutoring, and all this other shit. It would just be easier for them to pick 18-year-olds.

I was like, ‘I have to figure something out with this art shit. Am I going to sing or am I going to act?

“I was freelancing with Innovative Artists and my manager [managed] a couple of other black girls. Every time there would be an audition, I would see those girls and one of them would get it because they were 19 or 20. I would be like, ‘Fuck, am I just supposed to wait until I’m 18?’

“I was like, ‘What happens if I don’t wanna do this anymore?’ I felt myself not wanting to do it. I’m not into academics so I wasn’t trying to go to college. I was like, ‘I have to figure something out with this art shit. Am I going to sing or am I going to act? What am I gonna do?’ I wasn’t moving as quickly as I wanted it to move.”

Learning To Rap

Azealia Banks: “I felt like I was gonna get lost in this world of just auditioning for parts that I was never going to get and parts that I didn’t even want. I decided to take matters into my own hands. When I was 16, I started off writing R&B songs because with the musical theatre background and all the vocal training I had, using my singing voice was the easiest thing for me to do.

I was gonna write R&B songs, sing some of them, and see if I could pitch them to other artists and make money to keep myself out of having to go to college.

“I decided to sing and be a songwriter. That was really my whole plan with the music world: I was gonna write R&B songs, sing some of them, and see if I could pitch them to other artists and make money to keep myself out of having to go to college and off my mom’s couch. It just turned into some hipster rap shit.

“I would date guys who would listen to all kinds of rap. I would just hang out with them and play video games and listen to rap music. Then I kind of just started spitting. I was really wack at first but then I just started paying more attention and getting more creative.”

Influences

Azealia Banks: "I like all kinds of music. Personalities are more influential to me than music because I feel like I listen to a lot of shit in passing. Anything that I was really inspired by, I wouldn’t say in an interview because then like fucking X, Y, and Z female rappers would be listening to that shit. Any really popping shit, like art that I’m really inspired by, I wouldn’t say.

“I fuck with Styles P. Styles P is my shit. If there’s anything I need to do—like I need to wash my hair or wash the dishes—Styles P is like my ready, set, go music. Styles P is that nigga. He’s so underrated. He has these three old mixtapes—it’s like 88 songs—that I straight spin; The Ghost and The Machine, The Phantom Menace, and Ghost in the Shell.

Styles P is one of my two favorite rappers. And Homeboy Sandman. Like yo, any rapper you wanna get your mic ate, go see Homeboy Sandman... He's technically and lyrically the best rapper alive.

“He doesn’t try to be mad flashy but he’s that nigga. His shit is just so fly, it’s just so New York, and it’s like, ‘Yo fuck ya niggas. Anybody could get shot right now. Who wants it?’ [Laughs.] His shit is so gully. I fuck with him so much. Styles P is one of my two favorite rappers.

Meeting Diplo

Azealia Banks: “I met Diplo on MySpace on some creep shit. Dead-ass. You remember how creepy MySpace was? I was like 17 and I knew who he was, but I didn’t really know he was a big deal. Even though Diplo’s not a big deal. I love Diplo, but we have this thing where we’re always putting each other down.

I remember asking Diplo to be my DJ at one point because I didn’t know [who he was]. [Laughs.] He was just some dude hitting me on MySpace.

“He knew this guy I was dating at the time so it kind of all just tied in. I met him one time in the summer. He came to New York to a Fader party and we were kicking it with him and my boyfriend at the time. Eventually he started sending me beats and I was rapping on his beats.

“Diplo and Richard Russell—the guy who runs XL—were tight because of M.I.A. Diplo was trying to sign me at a point too. But Diplo has a big mouth and he was talking about me and other people started hitting me up too. At the end, Diplo was like, "You weren’t going to sign to Mad Decent?’ I’m like, ‘Nah, nigga." [Laughs.]

“I fuck with Diplo though, he’s so much fun. I always tell him he’s a black guy in a white guy’s body. He’s literally a jester. He needs a hat and a nose. [Laughs.] He’s so funny. We’re not that close—definitely not on no shit like that. We just have the same sense of humor.

I was like, ‘Yo Diplo is mad weird...' We were in the studio and we got into a fist fight. [Laughs.] We were like two little boys.

“I remember, in October 2009 I went to Philly to work with him. Philly is mad dirty. That city is industrial, with smoke stacks and brick buildings with mad cops and oppression and shit. [Laughs.] I was like, ‘What am I doing here? I need to get the fuck out of here.’

“It didn’t help that this niggas’ studio is in a mausoleum. I was like, ‘Yo this nigga's mad weird, I gonna deck this nigga.’ [Laughs.] We were in the studio and we got into a fist fight. [Laughs.] I forgot what it was over. We were like two little boys.

“We were in the studio and I like poked him or something, then he chopped me in the neck, and then I decked him. [Laughs.] I punched him in the face. [Laughs.] It was mad crazy. I got up and I was on the verge of tears. I was gonna leave and he was like, ‘Aw don’t leave, I’m sorry.’ [Laughs.]”

XL Recordings

Azealia Banks: “Around 2009, when I was 17, I put out my first song which was called ‘Seventeen’ and I got signed to XL. I went to London for the first time that year. That whole thing didn’t go as planned.

"I would send them stuff but they wouldn’t say anything because it was more traditional hip-hop and it wasn’t the hipster-y shit that they wanted me to do. This was when they had M.I.A., Santogold was big, and Diplo was hot shit.

XL would send me leftover beats. It’d be like, ‘Hey, I made this for Santi, do you like this?’ Automatically you’re like, ‘You made that for her, you didn’t make that for me. What am I really doing with this?’

“It was expected that I wanted to work with Diplo. I love Diplo and we do work together on stuff, but I didn’t really want my whole sound to be that because I didn’t want to be a part of that wave of people. No offense—there’s nothing wrong with that—I just wanted to stand out and do my own thing.

“They’d send me leftover beats. It’d be like, ‘Hey, I made this for Santi, do you like this?’ Automatically you’re like, ‘You made that for her, you didn’t make that for me. What am I really doing with this?’

Granted, when you’re a part of a scene—like when you truly honestly a part of a scene—it’s okay for that. But I wasn’t really a part of that scene. I didn’t have no legs in that scene. I didn’t have any friends in that scene. That wasn’t the kind of sound that I was trying to make.

“I’ve been around the industry for a while. I've always been that ghost floating around. I know a lot of people in different places. I’m new to the general public, but to the people in the offices—the real meat of the music industry—they know who I am. They know me as that girl from Uptown or that girl who raps.”

Fitting In vs. Standing Out

Azealia Banks: “When I started rapping, I knew who M.I.A. was, but I wasn’t aware of all the other girls like Kid Sister, Amanda Blank, and Rye Rye. When I came out, that’s who everyone was comparing me to—even nowadays they do that. Who wants to be compared to somebody else?

I wanted to be my own thing. I didn't want to be Santi 2.0 or M.I.A. 2.0. Once Nicki started to develop, I didn’t want to be Nicki 2.0. I don’t want to look like a biter. My whole shit is that I have to be the anti- whatever is popping.

“Nowadays all the ignorant people are like, ‘You’re a Santogold rip-off,’ because that’s the only other weird black girl that they can pull out of their brain. It’s not even like an insult. Santi is mad fucking talented. That bitch is the illest songwriter out.

I’m like, ‘What’s happening with my life?’ I felt like I was on such a good track and I lost it all. Like, ‘What am I gonna do?’”

Ratchet-Ass Teenage Days

Azealia Banks: “I was having trouble in New York because I felt like I was off course. I was raving a lot and wasting time at parties. Doing that whole thing where you got like $300, you spend $200 on your hair, you buy a skirt, and you got $70 left for the week. Then you spend $30 of that at the party and then you’re running around the city with your Metrocard trying to get free weed and free booze and stopping at your mom’s to eat.

Once XL dropped me I was like what am I gonna do this for? I’ve already burned all my bridges in the music industry. But that was my small mind, thinking that XL was the music industry.

“That’s that ratchet-ass teenage shit. Where you’re just like, ‘Yo I’m fucking ratchet but I got my Metrocard and my cellphone—I’m good.’ I was like whatever. I’m 19 but I have so much more to give to the world and so much more to earn for myself.

“I was eating hot dogs, Chinese french fries, and pizza. That $1 shit. Niggas know. I would go to my mom’s house and I’d be like, ‘Ma, you got $5?’ Like, you know how you just a bum and you don’t wanna ask your mother for no real money like $100? But with $5 you could get on the train, get a slice of pizza, and a soda with that. And when I get to my destination, my homegirlgot me on a train coming back. [Laughs.]

“Shit was grimy but those were like the best times of your life though. When shit was grimy, when you was smoking nickel bags and doing all kinds of other wack shit. When you was drinking Four Lokos and shopping at the thrift stores.

“But then I was like, ‘If I don’t stop partying so much now, I’m gonna be partying until I’m like 25. I’m not gonna have no man and I’m probably gonna look mad tired from partying OD.’ Or maybe not because, you know, black don’t crack. But I’m like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna look back in five years and be like I really didn’t get shit done because I gave up.’

“That’s pretty much what I was doing: Giving up. Once XL dropped me I was like, What am I gonna do this for? I’ve already burned all my bridges in the music industry. But that was my small mind, thinking that XL was the music industry.

"I was just gonna hang out in busted-ass New York City, go rave in fucking Greenpoint, and try to get with some rich nigga. That was the plan because I was depressed and I was giving up.”

Montreal

Azealia Banks: “Last summer, I went to Montreal. I needed to give myself a break. I had spent the last three years traveling, working in coffee shops, going to auditions, writing songs, and getting rejected. It was three years of uncertainty. I needed to get some clarity. I have some friends up there, so I went there and got my mind right. I literally went to Canada with $75.

“I stayed at my friend’s house and they cooked. I stayed in the house. I went up to the mountains in Mount Royal a few times, drank wine and smoked weed. I was mad heartbroken as well, my boyfriend had left me. I was single for like fucking forever. I was listening to Adele all summer and being very French; sitting on patios, eating cheese, drinking wine, smoking, wearing my hair up in buns, and crying. French misery.

“I went there, sang a lot, and just had a good time. A lot of my friends from Montreal are people that I still fuck with, like Jacques Greene and Lunice. Those are the two people in the ‘212’ video with me. Jacques Greene is the white guy and Lunice is the brown kid. That was just my little crew for the summer.

“I just had some time to smile and not deal with any bullshit. My mom would come down on me, being like, ‘You need to go back to school.’ When I came back down to New York, I was working at cafes again. Doing whatever to keep rapping. I was prepared to be underground.

“Then the ‘212’ video just started picking up steam. BBC was playing it, a lot of stations just started picking it up, and all of a sudden I’m on the radio regularly in Iceland, Australia, and Germany. Next thing you know I’m fucking booking Coachella and playing Chanel parties. Life is really good right now. And it turned around because I didn’t give up.”

Her song, “212”

Azealia Banks: “Me and DJ Skeet Skeet were in L.A. working on some stuff in January 2010. He played me the beat for ‘212’ [which sampled] ‘Float My Boat’ by Lazy Jay. I thought it was crazy and if I could rap on it, I would kill it. But that was a long time ago and I was like, 'I can’t do this.'

“This was too homo. Like, ‘What the fuck am I really doing? Everyone’s gonna say I’m a fucking dyke.’ So I left it in my iTunes like whatever. I would listen to it and spit a few words but I wasn’t serious about writing it. Once it got closer to me dying to impress XL, I started going through my iTunes looking for something to rap on.

I wrote ‘212’ with the hopes of impressing XL and getting back on their good side but Richard Russell was like, ‘Good Luck.’ XL dropped me after I wrote ‘212.’

“I found that beat again and I decided to go for it. It took me two weeks of writing to perfect the song before I recorded it. A lot of things tied into writing ‘212.’ I was getting evicted at the end of the month from my first apartment, my boyfriend just left me, and I was like, I gotta put myself up.

“For days on end I was sleeping on the couch, showering every other day, eating every other day, and staying up with candles burning, like, ‘Don’t forget to feed the cat and write the song.’ I immersed myself in this song for two weeks and then magic happened.

“I prayed a lot over it. I prayed for that one to happen authentically because that could have easily been another bitch rapping on a house beat. It had to be cool, some fashion shit, some Euro shit, but it had to be street because I still need my people to fuck with this.

The entertainment industry is 30% what you can do and 70% who you know.”

Her Universal Deal

Azealia Banks: “I’m on Polydor and Interscope. The deal literally came from the top. As soon as ‘212’ was on BBC Radio 1, David Joseph and Eugene Gray from Universal were hitting me up, then Jimmy Iovine was hitting me up. How it usually happens is, you get the indie label offers and then you get up to Interscope, Atlantic, and Def Jam. And then it gets that big.

I can’t talk about [how much I got for my deal]. But it wasn’t a deal XL gave me. XL signed me for like $5,000. Some sucker sh*t.

“I signed with Universal. I had a choice of who I wanted to work with. Niggas believe in me, like, for real. It’s not even gonna be some shit or to be like arrogant or whatever. The way I got signed was crazy. I got signed at the top.

“I can’t talk about [how much I got for my deal]. It wasn’t a bad deal. It wasn’t the deal XL gave me, they signed me for like $5,000. Some sucker nigga shit. But when you like 17 and you been on that train, 5 G’s is like a billion dollars.

You've name-dropped Jeremy in a bunch of songs. When did you first notice his designs?A$AP: Around 2008. We started doing the whole thing. He used to come out with Mickey Mouse shit, three tongues, African patterns and shit. I started getting exclusive shit from France. I liked it so much because the only way you can find it is if you go on eBay, and you’re paying double. There’s no way an average person is gonna have it.

Jeremy: Can I ask you a question? What does A$AP stand for?

A: It stands for “Always Strive and Prosper.” Which is cool, because it’s a positive thing. It’s constructive. People forget how important the youth is sometimes. They determine the future, you know? We respect our elders, so it’s an honor for us to have recognition from you guys. Rick Owens, Raf Simons, Jeremy Scott—that means a lot to us. Just like Jay-Z, Nas, and 2Pac—you guys mean that to us. Seriously.

J: Thank you, thank you.

A: This is more than just a rapper and a designer getting together. This is bringing the cultures together and clashing them.

A$AP, you’ve called yourself the flyest motherfucker on earth.A: I might have said that when I was high or something. [Laughs.]

What do you think this cover with Jeremy will do for your fashion cred?A: Everything. Because this guy’s a legend. He’s our hero, and we love what he does.

Jeremy, you’ve collaborated with some major players in rap. How does it feel to be co-signed by A$AP, one of the leaders of the new generation?

J: I’m very appreciative. I love hearing the stories about what my work means—not only to him, but to the kids he came up with. His friends, all of Harlem. For me that’s my ultimate goal: to touch people’s lives. The real people on the street. Of course I love having accolades from the fashion world and I’m thrilled with Rihanna and Gaga and Katy and everyone wearing my clothes. But when the real kids are using their money—

A: —Mmm-hmm.

J: —To buy something to express to the world who they are, to say, “This is who I am because I’m wearing this,” that is the ultimate compliment for me.

You both push the envelope in your respective fields. Is that what’s most important to you, doing your own thing?A: My own thing is all that matters to me. And it feels good when I get props for doing what’s best for me. I like when people admire it and relate to it.

J: The only box I’m in is a shoebox. That’s my challenge every time—to push the boundaries, to constantly be challenging, and at the same time doing what I feel is right. It’s easy to make something absurd. Sometimes people say, “Whoa”—like what I’m doing is crazy. It’s not for everyone. I have a special role and I take it deadly serious. I spend my life, all of my waking hours, working and thinking and trying to create and perfect new ideas.

How important is getting cosigned by your peers for each of you?A: Very important, it’s one of those things that you feel grateful for.

J: I feel lucky that people who came before me have given me mad props. I can’t find a better example than Mr. Lagerfeld. It’s so flattering. He’s the most iconic fashion designer of our time. To have him champion me so fully and let me into his world, these are things that I never expected when I was in school thinking about fashion.

Why do you think hip-hop is so fascinated with fashion and vice versa?A: As black people it was our thing to show that we’re not living in poverty and that we can afford extravagant things—that kind of stuck with us. So when our great-grandparents were putting on their favorite outfits, it was to put on a front for the hard times. And hip-hop is a bunch of people that never had nothing. Fashion is just an expression. It’s an art. It expresses your taste. Good taste is important in hip-hop. I wake up saying I’m going to look the best I can and do what the fuck I want to do. And that’s what it’s all about. I don’t know if I articulated it good because I’m pretty high right now—and I have a lisp and I’m going to Mars right now.

J: [Laughs.] The thing is hip-hop is one of the only communities that really started its own trends.

A: Wow.

J: That’s why I’ve always been inspired by hip-hop artists, because they transform things—even just the jean, turning it around, inside out, sagging it—all these different things. Yes, of course we get little things from other music movements, but hip-hop has been like, Pow! It’s really inspiring and it’s the only new music that has come along in eons. Rock and roll has been around—it’s changing forms. But hip-hop is major.

A: That is so crazy.

The beautiful thing between hip-hop and fashion is what’s going on here at this shoot. Some people may ask, “Why are these two together?” But this guy loves your clothes. You love the music.J: Absolutely.

A: Yes. It can happen anywhere. It can happen in rock. It can happen in punk. It can happen in funk. But hip-hop would cherish it more because it never happened before. It’s the unexpected—like having a black president. We cherish that.

J: We almost had a black Republican nominee—that’s even more mind-boggling!

A: In hip-hop culture, things are changing every day. For Jeremy to do this with me is different. I wear braids and I’ve got gold teeth and I look up to a fuckin’ designer and his name is Jeremy Scott. I’m from Harlem. People know me. I’m certified. I love these designers. I love Rick Owens. I’m just keeping it real. This is what I do. I’m keeping it on a whole ’nother level with you. When this comes out it’s gonna be a talked-about fuckin’ cover. This is going to be talked about for fuckin’ eons and centuries and ’til infinity.

A$AP, you’ve talked about this before, but why do you still think there’s homophobia and ignorance in rap?A: I’m not homosexual. That’s not where I’m at with my life. But I can still be greatly inspired by a homosexual. It has nothing to do with their sexuality. If I start discriminating against people, that will stop me as a person. That’s ignorant. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? It’s not like I want to date this motherfucker—I’m inspired by this dude. This isn’t about fashion, it’s what he personally did for me. I’m not saying I’m going to be an activist. I want to enlighten those brothers. I used to be like them, but I’m a grown-ass man. I don’t care what another man does with his time.

J: Why does it exist in the world? I don’t know. It’s just one of those things. I don’t know why people care about what other people do. When this becomes an issue in politics, that’s the thing that boggles my mind. I heard on CNN that Republicans won’t get behind Mitt Romney because of abortion and gay marriage. Why do you care?

Did each of you want to stand out from a young age?

J: I did for sure.

A: When I was 20 I got fed up with doing shit just because it was the popular thing to do. I became miserable trying to keep up with trends so I started setting them on my own.

J: I always felt there was a fire burning inside me that was different, that was stronger. I grew up on a farm. I was removed from everything.

A: That is fuckin’ amazing! You grew up on a farm? You see what I’m saying right now? He grew up on a fuckin’ farm! I grew up in Harlem and my music sounds like it’s from Houston, from Cali, or Westbumblefuck, for that matter. He grew up on a fuckin’ farm and look at this. Look at this!

J: I always felt that I was supposed to go on to do something else.

A: Did it take getting off the farm for you to become more creative?

J: I was already. From an early age I was wearing things in a different way and starting to figure out how to get things that I could either customize or make myself. Even with what I was given, I would totally twist it, turn it, put it together. I remember once in seventh grade wearing like seven shirts all together.

A: [Laughs.]

J: And then I would say, “My mom told me to dress warm today.”

A: [Laughs.]

J: I had all these different concepts that I would come up with, and every day at school was like a fashion show. The only reason I wanted to go to school was for people to see what I was wearing. I’m a lot more tame now because I have a fashion show. I used to have to have it all on me. I bought a Flavor Flav–style clock from the captain of the football team in my French class. I was always mixing different cultures, and there were people who said, “You shouldn’t do this because you’re white.” Especially in a place that was not urban. And I was all about hip-hop, and mixing different things with my high-fashion inspiration.

A: I told you it’s all about balls. You got to have balls to do it. Who can take that criticism? Someone with big fuckin’ balls, honestly. I’m serious. That’s what it takes. What designers inspired you?

J: When I first realized there were fashion designers I think I was 14. Gaultier was doing unusual things. I was also inspired by so many diverse things—hip-hop, punk, and even stuff at the mall. Everything was converging, and I would customize my own stuff so that I would have things that were personal or unique.

What would you consider your breakthrough moment?A: Right now. [Laughs.] Also when I signed my deal. You know that was a crazy fuckin’ deal to happen for me.

J: I feel like I’m always having a breakthrough.

A: That is so crazy. I should’ve said that!

J: [Laughs.] But it’s true. There are always so many goals and new things I want to achieve, and I feel so blessed for everything and so humbled by people’s support. When I turn on Twitter there’s people writing “I love you,” and they don’t even know me. It’s such a nice feeling. We all have bad days, and I don’t take it for granted. I really don’t, ’cause I’m a people person. I want some love.

When the going got tough, did you guys ever consider giving up?

A: Before I made it? Yeah, a lot of times. I’ve been through deep shit, like hella depressing shit where I doubted myself and I felt like it’s taking too fuckin’ long. And then I thought, “This is what I do best and I know I’m good. And if I know I’m really good, then the world has to know it.” And I kept pushing for it. There were times that I was like, “Fuck it man. I just want to keep selling drugs.” But I kept going.

And now you’ve got one of the hottest mixtapes of the year. If you could play it for anybody in the world, who would it be?A: Let me take my time with this. I would play it for my brother. He died. So I would play it for him.

God is blessing me and it’s been a long time coming. I’ve been poor. I’ve been hood rich. I’ve been heartbroken. I've been sad.

How does losing your brother affect you on a day-to-day basis?A: I try not to think about him at all. It hurts. But this is his way of blessing me, like looking over me. I don’t mean to sound like a cornball—because people might be reading this, like, “Oh, he’s about to talk some bullshit”—but I really feel like my brother’s up there. God is blessing me and it’s been a long time coming. I’ve been poor. I’ve been hood rich. I’ve been heartbroken. I’ve been sad. God is great, man. And I plan to keep Him in my life—and my brother. I’ll never forget about him, ever.

What about you, Jeremy? Did you ever feel like giving up?J: Yeah, after my fourth show everyone decided to turn against me. I did a show that was all gold and it was in the middle of [a period of] minimalism, and people were like, “This is too brash and too tacky.” And, yeah, it was harsh to have Anna Wintour in your front row and all these people like André Leon Tally suddenly saying, “Oh, you should never design again.”

A: He said that?

J: Yeah, and other people said some really harsh shit. I weathered it and survived. So I’ve had tough times but I never felt like I shouldn’t do it. It was just tough to bear ’cause everyone wants a little love. Those are the things in life that make us stronger.

A: What year was that?

J: That was ’98, ’99.

A: Well look at you now.

What made you keep going?J: It’s funny because the outfit Rihanna wears at the finale of her tour is something she asked me to duplicate from that show. She was freaking out. She said, “This is amazing! Can you make me one of these?” It was a full circle moment. I just try never to get too caught up in that.

I don’t want to be negative about it. If other people didn’t have the vision—that’s their lack and their misfortune. And that’s not going to be mine. Any artist has to go through these journeys, like what you’ve talked about. That’s the artist’s way. That’s what we have to do and that’s our burden. Maybe other people can’t bear that. We bear that for others. That’s part of our job and the reason people appreciate us.

Every several years it appears we all become witnesses to a special music talent. The type of talent whose body of work seemingly transcends beyond the plateaus of music. Their individuality and swagger: effortless. This person we refer to is A$AP Rocky, and with all systems going, 2012 is destined to be a stellar year for him to say the least. We caught up with the young Harlemite as he discussed some of the inner workings of his A$AP family and some of the things he’ll be getting into. “Always Strive and Prosper” -A$AP

First off, the question many have been wondering – who is the girl in the “Purple Swag” video?
Anna Perp man, she’s a trill ass chick from Harlem, and yes she’s Caucasian, gold grill shining, a bad b*tch, and yes she uses the “N” word on a full-time regular basis. Well not born, but she lives in Harlem, she's trill as fuck, nothing generic about her, not a poser, I just can’t wait for the world to see her. She kind of disappeared, because she was getting a little too much attention. So she's in North Carolina with her parents but she’ll be back soon. She’s trill as fuck, she’s down there breeding pit bulls, she’s into that stuff.

How did the term “A$AP” first get invented and when was the first time it came up?
It stands for “Always Strive And Prosper,” and I didn’t join A$AP until 2007. So for me, I used to just hang in Harlem. I was the guy that used to just fuck with all the bitches and get fly shit. At the time, A$AP was a crew out there that didn’t get a lot of recognition but they caught my eye because real will always recognize the real, you know? The downtown (Manhattan) types kind of people only fucked with A$AP at the time, you know like SoHo. Then these guys from Harlem kind of filled the gap, because they were really on that shit before it was cool to dress how they dress right now, you know what I mean? These dudes were really doing it at a time when you would really get patronized for this type of thing. I felt we shared a lot in common, from our views and realizing we are outcasts and just say “fuck it we’re going to be ourselves.” The game didn’t accept us at first and now it’s like they have no choice, these n*ggas have to love us now. I joined the crew in 2007 and eventually more people have been getting down, so I didn’t start it or am I the leader. I just made it hot. The real will always recognize real.

No doubt. Your mixtape LiveLoveA$APreceived very a positive response within the industry and beyond, so it makes sense to reissue it commercially. When did this move first crossed your mind and what reaction do you expect from the fans?
I expect the fans to fuck with it, it’s just one of things, it is what it is. I got really, really good feedback off this mixtape although it was so different. Yet people were willing to listen to it at a time when the masses were reluctant to get familiar with something so different. But for the most part I got a lot of good reaction, and we’re going to remaster it, deluxe edition, different features, different songs, and put it out for purchase. It’s going to be cool, it’s going to be a good look and think people are going to fuck with it.

With a record deal worth $3 million dollars, what are your plans for the A$AP movement? Referring to future releases and overall vision...maybe even beyond music?
As far as we can go, there’s no limit bro, everything, everything! I’m so serious. We’re so talented and I don’t want to be so cliche but it is what it is. We got song writers, producers, actors, athletes, we got some trill ass motherfuckers man.

With the A$AP movement in full force, what will be your formula to achieve longevity?

Just to stay true and keep doing what I have been doing. Not trying to appeal, just because, you know? Just do me, that's all. Personally, that’s all I’m doing. I’m just doing me and it’s fun as fuck. I don’t have to try to make a club sounding record, I’m comfortable with the records I make.

If they play it on the radio, I’ll be honored. If they play it in the club, I’ll be honored, I’m just doing whatever the fuck I want to do, and that’s how you get longevity – focusing on what you want to do and what makes you happy. A lot of people don’t know themselves. Thank God we found ourselves and we’re outcasts and we don’t give a fuck what anybody thinks. We’re gold slugging it, we’re different. We just do whatever the fuck we want it, and people will learn to appreciate it because everyone is doing the same shit. You know what time it is bro, I can tell you got taste.

Let the readers decide on that one. Alongside the fans, you’ve had a share of prominent cosigns, notably Drake. Pusha T also freestyled over the Peso instrumental and hinted at a possible collaboration between you guys. Is there any collabos on the horizon and any artists you would love to work with?
Honestly on some real shit, I have never been anywhere outside of New York. Maybe Pennsylvania and California. With A$AP it was just us doing us, and people just rolled with it, and we didn’t know anybody, like I don’t know nobody. I just started doing my thing, feel me? We just came out the woodwork, and now I’m starting to get the ball rolling. I don’t want to say I’m working with this person or that person, but everything is just new to me.

Despite some bogus rumors, you clarified there is no beef between A$AP and Odd Future. So any chances we could see both camps working together in the future?
I’d love to. I haven’t spoken to anybody in that camp, but I’d love to. I fuck with these guys, I fuck with Tyler.

The Houston influence is evident in several of your tracks being chopped and screwed, can you tell us how this all ties in?
I have never been to Houston, but I’m influenced by its culture. It’s like Wu-Tang having never been to China, you feel me? But they studied it and it is what it is. Just to clarify, I don’t claim to be from Houston. I’m from Harlem, and as mentioned, I ain’t never been nowhere outside of NYC, but I will be going to Houston in a week or two to get with Bun B.

What’s going on with that?
I haven’t met him in person yet but he did a “Purple Swag” remix, and there’s a few people who are genuinely cool people, and he’s definitely one of them. There’s just a lot of Hollywood people out there, and I’m trying to avoid all that.

You direct your own music videos and recently did one for Danny Brown. Can you tell us how the visual creation came together?
Honestly bro, I said to him “I want to shoot your video” he said “okay,” I asked “when you need it by” he said “two days” and that was it. I took him to the store, we got a basement, called some bitches, bought some candles, bought a smoke machine and made the best of it. We weren’t working with a huge budget, none of that, just raw. I think that was the cleanest raw video ever personally. I did it in one day, and it was freestyle. I direct all my own videos and I have one I’m doing for CurT@!n$ coming out soon.
